Potovalni vodič po Mallorci / Mallorca travel guide (Slo & Eng)

10 October 2018

Če vas zanima kje prenočiti, kaj si ogledati in kje dobro jesti, vas vabim k nadaljnjem branju.

Hello everybody,
I wanted to visit Mallorca for a long time, mostly because of their beautiful beaches and the Spanish culture. My dad and I found a great flight deal online and we were already looking forward to our trip. Because we did a lot of exploring of this beautiful island, I decided to share with you my Mallorca travel guide. If you want to know where to stay, what to do and where to find great restaurants - keep reading :)

Kako do Mallorce / How to get to Mallorca

We bought a plane ticket on Ryanair website from Graz, Austria to Mallorca, Spain (PMI airport). The operating airline was Laudamotion. A return ticket was only 60 euros from July 26th to August 1st. Since I am from Velenje, getting to Graz was very easy and It took us only 1 hour and 45 minutes by car.

Should I rent a car in Mallorca or use public transport?

Definitely rent a car. Mallorca is not a large island, but their public transport can take you too much of your precious time. The sightseeing points are scattered all over the island and that is why it is better to go for a car rental. Now, this can be a nerve-wracking thing, as it was for me. There are two options, rent a car in advance or renting it once you get there. My recommendation is to not rent it in advance. Why? Because almost every car rental company will want a deposit when you rent a car online, and sometimes you don't even get that amount back. The amount of deposit is huge, around 1000 euros for a car + price for rental per day. That is why we rented a car when we arrived at the airport. There are many rental companies there, but we suggest Hertz. For 7 days of rental of a new Opel Corsa, we paid 37 euros/day + 100 euros of deposit which we got back 2 days after we returned the car.

{english}
I was there at the beginning of August and I would say that it was not a great time for exploring the island, because there was almost 37 degrees and it was impossible to enjoy sightseeing. If you ask me, I would recommend visiting Mallorca in September, because the weather is still nice and the temperatures are normal.

Kje prenočiti / Where to stay

We booked a hotel with breakfast in a beautiful east coast village of Portocolom, it is a traditional fishing village, located in the district of Felanitx, which is a 1-hour drive from Palma. The name of our hotel was Hostal Bahía Azul (you can read all about it here). I definitely recommend this hotel if you prefer cosiness over modernism and luxury. The property is right at the sea, near many restaurants, bars and supermarkets and is only 10 minutes walk to a famous beach Cala Marcal. I really enjoyed staying at this hotel because every apartment has a terrace and there is also a great pool outside.

Kje jesti v Portocolomu / Where and what to eat in Portocolom

Caffe chill out La playa je tik ob najbolj znameniti plaži blizu Portocoloma in tam sem jedla zelo okusne palačinke z jagodami.

{english}
If you decide to stay in Portocolom, then I highly recommend a restaurant called Ses Portadores. The prices are a bit high (around 12 euro/dish), but you always get an appetizer before for free and the food is so delicious. We were lucky because our hotel also had a restaurant so we could eat there when we didn't want to go around and search for other restaurants. Restaurant Es Retorn in Portocolom has amazing pizzas and lasagnas for a fair price. Because I love pancakes I couldn't go home without trying pancakes at least once. So I googled it and found Caffe chill out La playa where they serve delicious pancakes with strawberries.

Let me warn you that Mallorca isn't cheap at all. Most restaurants have very high prices for their dishes. For example pancakes 7 euros, Lasagna 10 euros, Seafood Paella 17 euros, one scoop of ice cream 4 euros. When in Mallorca you must try paella (rice with vegetables or seafood), gazpacho (cold tomato soup) and tapas.

Kaj si ogledati na Mallorci? / What to see in Mallorca

Če so vam všeč stara mestna jedra, starinska arhitektura in ozke ulice priporočam ogled tega mesta, predvsem starega dela, saj je novi del bolj moderen in zasut s stojnicami.

Jaz sem tam poskusila sladoled s solnim cvetom in karamelo, njami!

5) Glavno mesto Palma

{english}
Since we rented a car which I mentioned above, the whole island was very reachable. We stayed in Mallorca for 7 days but decided to split our vacation for 4 days of exploring and the other 3 days of relaxing on the beach. It is almost impossible to see everything, but here are my top 5 attractions to see when exploring the island:

1) Observation points: Mirador Es Colomer and Cap de Formentor

Great place to take amazing photos. The parking at Mirador Es Colomer is free. There was a one hour drive from Portocolom.

2) Famous beach Cala Sant Vicenç

Nothing much to say here, only that the view is ah-mazing and I have never seen a beach more beautiful than this one. The turquoise sea has astonished me.  It is the best to go there in the morning and take a beach towel with you. There are also some cafes and bars near the beach and you can park there for free.

3) Old town Alcúdia

If you like old towns with narrow streets and amazing architecture, then you will love Alcúdia. There are many little shops and cafes in the old part of the city. You can also go out of this old part and walk to the beach.

Unfortunately, I haven't got the chance to visit salt fields because they have certain opening hours and a few guided tours per day. Make sure to book a visit in advance. Even if you do not decide to see salt fields, you can still visit the shop with many salt products. I've tried salted caramel ice cream.

5) Capital city Palma

Palma is very crowded with tourists. Many restaurants are full and it is hard to find a place to chill in peace. Also, everything is very expensive there. We went to Cappuccino Grand Cafe and paid 8 euros for one piece of matcha cake, and 5 euros for a coffee. But at least the place was very rustic and nice. Parking in Palma is not expensive, there are many parking lots only a few minutes walk to the city centre.
