Poletni roadtrip 2019 / Summer roadtrip 2019 (SLO&ENG)

18 September 2019

Some people like to travel by plane while others prefer to do it by car because it is much more convenient and flexible. My father and I love to travel and this summer we decided to visit some former Yugoslavia countries. We chose Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia. Hope you will like this post and it will inspire you for a great holiday :)

This post is an overview of my summer road trip along with some tips for organising a holiday with a car. In future posts, you will be able to read more in detail about each of the countries and cities I have visited.

OSNOVNI PODATKI O OBISKANIH DRŽAVAH / BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE VISITED COUNTRIES

When planning your trip, it is essential to study the basic information about the countries you want to visit. By doing that you will avoid many inconveniences.

CROATIA (currency: Croatian kuna, EU member, you need a valid passport or ID card to enter the country)

MONTENEGRO (currency: euro, non-EU member, you need a valid passport or ID card to enter the country and also a green card if you travel by car)

BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA (currency: convertible mark, non-EU member, you need a valid passport or ID card to enter the country and also a green card if you travel by car)

KAKO NAČRTOVATI POTOVANJE / HOW TO PLAN A ROADTRIP

It all starts with a list of places/countries you want to visit. My desired destination was Montenegro since I spend most of my trip there. I knew that driving from Slovenia to Montenegro would be difficult because of the high summer temperatures and many congestions, so I decided to see some other places as well and get some rest. That is why I decided to stay in Dubrovnik on my way to Montenegro and stay in Mostar on my way home. I was very happy with my decision. The next step is to decide how many days are you going to stay at a certain city and how you want to spend your days there. For efficient planning, I recommend creating your own map (e.g. summer road trip 2019) in Google Maps (click).

NAJIN POTOVALNI NAČRT / OUR ROADTRIP PLAN

DAN 1-3: DUBROVNIK / DAY 1-3: DUBROVNIK

Obisk Dubrovnika vam močno odsvetujem v poletnih dneh. Dobra predela z dostopnimi cenami nastanitev sta Babin Kuk in Lapad. V Dubrovniku avta ne potrebujete, saj so cene parkirišč vrtoglave medtem ko so njihovi javni prevozi poceni in učinkoviti.

I strongly advise you to not visit Dubrovnik during the summer days. I had to experience it by myself because I didn't know there would be such heat. All three days in mid-August, the temperature was 40 degrees in the sun. So my advice is to see Dubrovnik in the spring or early summer or fall to avoid the crowds and high temperatures. I would also advise you to take at least three days for sightseeing because there are many sights. Check out Google tips for sightseeing in Dubrovnik here. I advise you to book a stay a bit little outside the centre and close to the beach, so you can combine both - rest and sightseeing. Good places with affordable accommodation are Babin Kuk and Lapad. You don't need a car in Dubrovnik, as parking rates are high, while their public transportation is cheap and efficient.

DAN 3-6: KOTOR / DAY 3-6: KOTOR

The temperatures in Montenegro in the middle of August are high but very pleasant and lower than in Dubrovnik. It is much easier to do sightseeing. Kotor totally impressed me. It left a special mark in my heart and I definitely want to see it again. The town is small, the most interesting is the old part of the city, which is surrounded by walls. I advise you to book a stay outside Kotor - because the city can be a bit noisy and close to the beach, so you can combine both - rest and sightseeing. Good areas with affordable accommodation are Prčanj, Dobrota, Perast, Muo. You do not need a car to get to the city, because the city bus is very affordable. If you want you can rent a car and see the whole Bay of Kotor and visit national parks (such as Lovćen).

DAN 6-9: BUDVA / DAY 6-9: BUDVA

Cene prenočišč so v Budvi kar visoke, še posebej blizu znanih plaž, vendar vam vseeno svetujem, da si rezervirate hotel nekje blizu centra starega dela mesta in blizu plaže.

{english}
For those of you who don't like crowds, clubs, over-crowded beaches and modern cities, Budva is not for you. I'm not sorry that I decided to stay there a few days because I used this location as a starting point for other short trips. Also, after six days of sightseeing, I needed a little rest. Accommodations are quite expensive in Budva, especially near the famous beaches, but I still advise you to book a hotel somewhere near the centre of the old part of town and close to the beach.

DAN 9-10: MOSTAR / DAY 9-10: MOSTAR

{english}
The place everyone should visit is definitely Mostar. It is so unique, so pretty that is leaves a mark in your heart and makes you want to see it again. One whole day is enough for sightseeing because the old part of town is very small. Accommodations here are very cheap.
